Walnut Shell Sandblasting Media

Sandblasting with walnut shells is an effective method for cleaning, removing paint, rust, corrosion and other debris from various surfaces.  Walnut shells can be used as an abrasive for deflashing and cleaning parts.  Walnut shells are considered a gentle blasting media which does not damage the substrate of the material.

Using walnut shells as an abrasive medium has many benefits.  Walnut shells are softer than glass beads and aluminum oxide. This makes them ideal for working on delicate objects such as jewelry or carvings without damaging the surface.  In comparison to glass beads or aluminum oxide, walnut shells are also more economical and easier to clean up after use.  Walnut shells can be used in air blast or wheel blast equipment.

Crushed walnut shells do not absorb moisture. They can be reused multiple times before needing to be replaced. This makes them a greener option. Because they are biodegradable, they don’t leave behind any hazardous waste after use. Finally, since they have low dust output, walnut shells are safer and more pleasant to work with in comparison to other sandblasting abrasives.

At BlastAndTumble.com, we offer 12-20 grit and 18-40 grit walnut shell.  12-20 is a medium coarse grit.  18-40 is a fine grit.

Because walnut shells are considered to be a gentler sandblasting media, they are less
effective at removing paint or rust from tougher surfaces where glass beads and aluminum oxide do a better job. You may not achieve the desired level of finishing when working on certain types of surfaces such as metal components or industrial equipment.

When it comes to choosing a material for your sandblasting project, consider all your options before making a decision. Walnut shells offer many advantages over other abrasive media including their softness, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness and low dust output.

Keep in mind that due to their softer nature walnut shells may not be the best choice for tougher surfaces such as industrial equipment or metal components where aluminum oxide or glass beads will be superior.  Ultimately it comes down to personal preference but it’s good to evaluate all your options before deciding which abrasive is best suited for your job.
